Eating Seasonally

Eating seasonally is a something I believe strongly in. It can be hard to accomplish in Calgary mid winter but it is still possible. There are many reasons I promote seasonal fruits and vegetables. I have provided a list of seasonal fruits and vegetables that are in season now in Calgary.

Foods picked at the peak of freshness are more nutrient dense than fruits and vegetables picked underripe or out of season. In order for your body to be noursihed optimally you will require a wide variety of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, enzymes, phytochemicals from whole foods. When eating seasonally, it allows our body to recieve the nutrients it needs specific to what is happening in our environment. Autum requires grounding foods from roots and tubers, where as, in Spring our body requires cleansing and detoxifying foods such as leafy greens.

Eating with the seasons is beneficial for the environment as food doesn’t travel thousands of miles before it reaches your plate. By making a choice to eat local we support the planet and protect the water, air and land. Sustainable, organic, seasonal foods are grown by farmers who rotate crops, do not use toxic chemicals to control pests and use sustainable composting methods. This equates to a more nutritious, tastier product over conventially raised foods.

Try and include these foods into your diet this fall, rotating between different fruits and vegetables each week.
