Food Review

Sugo

SugoOn my last blog I reviewed restaurants in and around Calgary and I had forgotten about it until I received an note from one of my favourite clients to start doing reviews again. So here I am.

I was in Inglewood searching for food photo props and I had the opportunity to try Sugo.  To my sadness the store I was looking forward to had been shut down permanently due to the floods. So after much disappointment, walking in the cold rain, with no food photo props, Sugo looked like an inviting destination for lunch and it was directly across from where we parked. It turned out to be the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Grabbing a quick bite with your a nutritionist can be tricky but it doesn’t have to be. I prefer clean sources  of proteins, the use of local ingredients and seasonal menus and of course it’s always nice if it tastes great. I don’t over complicate requests by asking for gluten free or making a big deal about no dairy. It’s too much trouble and if you are in the right places there is no need. I look for the simplest thing on the menu that I don’t have to alter and it normally ends up coming out exactly as I like. If it’s a cold day, soup is always a good choice and I lucked out with a broth soup instead of a creamy soup. Salad is easy and if your not eating at a shady diner it’s pretty hard to mess up. Another option is to ask for burgers, no bun and a side salad or the fish of the day. Sugo was serving a delicious wild boar burger topped with pineapple and a pickle, served with chutney and relish. Easy, gluten free, and nutritious.

What I also like about Sugo is there menu constantly changes, which is a good thing. It allows the chef to incorporate seasonal foods which means more nutrition. There is no need to calorie count when eating food that is as close to the earth as possible. Clean food.

In the end my meal was delicious and Sugo had the Italian restaurant feel nailed, warm cozy, comfortable seating and authentic food.

Sugo is located at 1214 – 9th Avenue SE, Calgary, Alberta.  For reservations call (403) 263-1115
